The Eighteenth Zen Patriarch Gayasata once travelled to the country of Yueshi. There was a Brahman, Kumāralabdha, who had questions because of the peculiar behavior of his dog, and wished to obtain answers. This desire led him to meet with the Patriarch and he eventually received enlightenment from the Master. The Supreme Master Ching Hai explained: "The Buddhas and bodhisattvas will use all kinds of methods to liberate sentient beings. Our husbands and wives might also help us to become Buddha. Because we might have done something that touched the Heavens, Buddha and bodhisattvas and pleases them so they want to help us. Of course, our husbands and wives are still ordinary beings, but if we are sincere, then Buddha will use them as tools to help us. So, in this story, even a dog can help a person to become a Zen Patriarch. If we want to obtain the Chintamani (the Mani Jewel), we should fight with our mind. Our mind is more poisonous than snakes, our ego is more poisonous than snakes. We can use something to kill a snake; but there is no way that we can kill our mind or control it. It does not listen. So only with Quan Yin, with the contemplation of the Sound, with the inside method can we control it and wash it clean. While we cleanse it, we open the door that will allow our soul to be liberated gradually, until one day, completely.”
