Summary
In this talk, Supreme Master Ching Hai tells the story of Master Milarepa of Tibet, and presents tips on how to progress in spiritual practice. Why did Milarepa achieve no results after living with his Master for over seven years? Master explains that it’s not easy for people who are cold-hearted, as Milarepa was in his youth, to advance spiritually because they have a cold atmosphere around them; cold attracts cold and like attracts like. Thus, they cannot get the warmth of love close to them and they progress slowly in their practice. As Master says, “We need to follow the Precepts closely. On the one hand we have our cold heart, and on the other hand we control ourselves. If we don’t do coldhearted things, even though we have a cold heart our magnetic field will not be too cold. And we won’t attract a cold atmosphere with much obstruction.”
Whether we progress quickly or slowly does not depend solely on Master. It depends on whether or not our heart is simple. Sometimes we would like to become simple but cannot because of the karma that we created when we did coldhearted deeds in past lifetimes, and so have a cold wall around us. This makes us unable to completely trust Master, to completely consecrate our physical actions, speech, and mind to the practice. Conversely, anyone who truly believes in Master and follows what Master says one hundred percent will progress quickly.
