Meat, alcohol, cigarettes and drugs have caused many diseases and crimes, poisoned our health, mind and spirituality.  The resulting karma has also led to various kinds of natural disasters.  Most of the people do not know or understand the damaging effect and costly consequences of meat consumption, such as soil aridity, glacial melting and reduction in grain production, etc.  Therefore, it is now critical to be vegan.
