What does it mean by being a Buddhist? A Buddhist is someone who is very kind and virtuous, practices spiritually, and at the very least keeps the five precepts: no killing, no stealing, no alcohol, no telling lies and no adultery. If he believes in Jesus Christ and also keeps the five precepts, he can be regarded as a Buddhist as well.
One cannot become a Buddha by being vegetarian or vegan only; however, if he is not vegan, it’s also impossible for him to attain Buddhahood. Besides adopting a vegan diet, being virtuous, reading sutras and referring to moral teachings, we should also find our original nature so as to become Buddha. It’s not enough just to give alms, keep precepts, be tolerant and practice diligently; we also need to meditate in order to have wisdom; with wisdom, we can finally attain Buddhahood.
